The Baroro Fisherfolks Association has taken up the essential task of protecting La Union’s coastal ecosystems, leading weekly clean-ups in Baroro, Bacnotan, and removing over 310 lbs of trash in the past two weeks. This grassroots initiative, involving over 50 fisherfolks and benefiting more than 210 community members, is a powerful example of sustainable conservation efforts.
Despite the pressures of urban development, these dedicated fisherfolk strive to preserve the beaches that sustain their livelihoods and serve as critical sea turtle nesting sites. Their connection to the sea makes them invaluable partners in sea turtle conservation, as they regularly report sightings of nesting and stranded turtles to help ensure timely assistance.
Our heartfelt thanks go to Jessie Cabagbag, president of the association, Bacnotan Mayor Carmelo “Pogi” Lazatin, Jr., La Zarene Suites for their generous donation of rice, Generika Drugstore for providing vitamins, and the Embassy of Canada in the Philippines for their continued support.
To keep this momentum going, we’re reaching out for additional support—from snacks and refreshments to uniforms. As Jessie puts it, “Even some coffee helps to give participants something to look forward to.”
