Despite the storm, turtle patrollers secure third and fourth nest of the season

On the stormy night of October 23, dedicated turtle patrollers braved the elements to protect two more sea turtle nests in San Juan, marking our third and fourth nest discoveries of the season! As midnight approached, Johng Martinez from Four Four A’ces Surf School reported the first sighting: a nesting turtle near Urbiztondo, San Juan. Instinctively, this mother turtle nested further inland, away from the rising waves. Nearby surf instructor Macmac Galanza, alerted by barking dogs, joined the efforts, helping to tag the mother turtle and secure her 90 eggs, which were promptly transferred to the hatchery for safe keeping.

Just 30 minutes later, Johnny Manglugay, along with his loyal dog Bantay, reported another nest in Ili Sur. Bantay, though new to the task this season, had already shown remarkable talent by locating his second nest in just 24 hours! This mother turtle, like the first, nested away from the waterline, ensuring her eggs had the best chance of safety. Without these timely discoveries, both nests would have been vulnerable to the approaching storm.
