A total of 1,600 mangroves were successfully planted in the Municipality of Aringay, La Union, as part of an initiative to restore former fishponds into thriving wetlands that support local communities and wildlife. This collaborative effort brought together the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG), the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP), the Philippine National Police (PNP), the Jaime V. Ongpin Foundation, and community members to rehabilitate these critical ecosystems.
Mangroves play a vital role in mitigating flooding, protecting coastlines, enhancing biodiversity, and strengthening community resilience against climate change. The initiative was made possible through the coordination of the Provincial Government of La Union and the Municipality of Aringay, with support from the Embassy of Canada in the Philippines.
