Canadian Ambassador’s Visit to CURMA Highlights Collaborative Marine Conservation Efforts in La Union

Ambassador of Canada, David Hartman, visited La Union to witness the impactful conservation efforts of the Coastal Underwater Resource Management Alliance (CURMA), supported by the Embassy of Canada in the Philippines. During his visit, the Ambassador was welcomed by Governor Rafy Ortega-David and participated in a Turtle 101 session at Taboc Elementary School, engaging with over 250 students and inspiring the next generation of ocean guardians. A roundtable discussion followed, bringing together key agencies, including the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR), the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), the Philippine Navy, the Coast Guard, the Maritime Police, the San Juan Local Government Unit (LGU), the Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Office (PENRO), and the Provincial Government-Environment and Natural Resources Office (PG-ENRO), to enhance marine protection, strengthen enforcement against illegal fishing, and promote community-driven conservation initiatives. The visit concluded with the release of 148 sea turtle hatchlings. The continued support of the Embassy plays a crucial role in advancing marine conservation and benefiting local communities.
